Former Governor Martha Layne Collins to be laid to rest
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Kentucky is honoring the life and legacy of a trailblazer in state politics. Former Governor Martha Layne Collins has died at the age of 88. Collins made history as Kentucky’s first and only female governor, serving from 1983 to 1987.
During her time in office, Collins prioritized education reform and economic development, most notably playing a key role in bringing Toyota Manufacturing to Georgetown — a move that reshaped Kentucky’s economy and created thousands of jobs.
Collins will lie in state at the Old State Capitol in Frankfort on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., followed by funeral services immediately after.
She’s remembered as a lifelong educator, public servant, and pioneer who opened doors for women in Kentucky politics and beyond.
