Former FCPS superintendent passes away

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Fayette County Public Schools is mourning the death of former Superintendent Tom Shelton, according to a statement released by the district.

Shelton was 62.

FCPS officials say Shelton’s passing was unexpected and has deeply saddened the school community.

Shelton served as superintendent from 2011 to 2014 and, according to the release, led several initiatives that continue to shape the district today. During his tenure, he oversaw the creation of FCPS’ first districtwide professional learning community, which helped establish a mission statement the district says still guides its work.

The release says Shelton also expanded academic opportunities for students who thrive in nontraditional settings, including the opening of Carter G. Woodson Academy, STEAM Academy, and The Stables.

District leaders described Shelton as a systems thinker who believed in distributive leadership, strong community partnerships, and collaboration. FCPS officials say he worked to ensure every school had the structures, expertise, and resources needed to serve students at high levels.

According to the statement, Shelton consistently emphasized the importance of connection and encouraged employees across the district to recognize the impact they could have on students’ lives.

No additional details were released.
