NTSB report cites loose, missing parts in 2022 helicopter crash that killed former ABC 36 Meteorologist Jason Myers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Nearly three years after a deadly helicopter crash in Charlotte, federal investigators have determined what caused it — and the findings are heartbreaking for those who knew and loved former ABC 36 Chief Meteorologist Jason Myers.
The National Transportation Safety Board says parts that help control the helicopter in flight were loose or missing, causing the pilot to lose control. Investigators believe the problem may have started years earlier and went undetected during routine safety checks.
On November 22, 2022, Myers was on a training flight for his Charlotte television station when the helicopter went down near a busy highway. Pilot Chip Tayag was praised for steering away from the roadway, likely saving lives on the ground. Both men were killed instantly.
Jason Myers was more than a meteorologist — he was a familiar face in Central Kentucky homes from 2013 to 2019, known for his warmth, kindness, and passion for weather. His death was felt deeply across Lexington, where many still remember his smile and community spirit.
Our thoughts remain with Jason’s wife, children, friends, and colleagues — and with the family of Chip Tayag — as they continue to heal from this loss.
