Former Cat coaching New Mexico State

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – New Mexico State head coach Doug Martin is familiar with Kentucky.

The UK grad played QB for the Cats from 1981-1984.  He spent time as a student coach following injuries sidelining his playing career.

Martin’s wife, Vicki, is also a UK grad.  The two met in Lexington.

The Jerry Claiborne product remembers his time at UK fondly and says he owes a lot to coach for getting him his degree, and his first job, at East Tennessee State following his time as a grad assistant with the Cats.

You may remember Martin was the head coach at Kent State in 2007 when UK beat the Golden Flashes 56-20.

It was tied at 17 at the half, and, if you ask Martin, it’s the first thing he’ll tell you about that game.

The Aggies are coming off a 32-31 rivalry win over New Mexico, and even with Kentucky struggling, Martin knows it’ll be a big step up in class for his team on Saturday.
