Former ABC 36 Reporter Amber Krycka covers Hurricane Matthew
JACKSONVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ)-As tens of thousands of people in Florida living along the coast evacuate, Former ABC 36 News reporter Amber Krycka is in the eye of the storm.
She says, “I’d be silly not to say I’m a little scared, concerned. I do not know what to expect.”
She’s been at her new station in Jacksonville, WJAX, for not even two months and she’s already covered two hurricanes.
“You know we had hurricane Hermine about a month ago. People were kind of taking that seriously but nothing like hurricane Matthew. Everyone’s like this is it. This is the real deal.”
She says people in Jacksonville have been dealing with heavy rains and flooding not even associated with Hurricane Matthew for the past week. With more than 250 dead in Haiti and devastation across the Caribbean she says people for the most part are heeding all the warnings.
“People I think are really listening to the city leaders. They’re taking it seriously again. You have some people who aren’t but hopefully they will soon, take the advice and get out.”
She says grocery stores shelves are running low on bread and water and there are long lines at the pump as people move away from the coastline.
“It’s just been kind of non-stop, people are kind of panicking in a sense, concerned. A lot of these people have been here for years, but haven’t seen a hurricane like this.”
But amber will be out on the front lines doing her job.
She says, “As journalists this is what we do. We’re here to inform you, to keep you safe. This is why we do what we do because we care about you. Even though we’re putting our lives at risk.”
