Coach Rebecca Shearer said when she got to practice Friday morning, just two day’s after the pipeline explosion, some of her players were shaken up.
That’s when they decided to host the Lady Eagle Classic and food Drive. Nonperishable items are being collected at both the Middle School and High School.
“I think it’s good that our girls teams get to see that there are so many more things important in life than just basketball and we really try to focus on that because we know that basketball is a temporary thing in our life but working together and helping each other that’s a lifelong thing for them to get to do,” Shearer said.
She says the classic is a perfect opportunity to open up the gyms to those who want to help out. Teams from Garrard County, Saint Joe, and East Jessamine also participated.
“It gives those kids a sense of, you know, we’re working together. They’re not just here to play ball, they’re here for a special purpose as well,” Shearer said.
They will continue to collect items during the classic on Sunday, starting at noon and going until 5 p.m.
