Flight 5191 officer looks back ahead of 10-year anniversary
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- For now sergeant Bryan Jared, there’s not a day goes by he doesn’t think about the 49 families forever impacted by the crash of ComAir flight 5191 in Lexington.
Jared wasn’t a sergeant when he raced through grass taller than his squad car to the scene of the fiery crash, but he remember it all the same, especially the emotions. This week, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the crash, those emotions are coming back.
“It kind of brings up all the emotions and the feelings that you had even from the day back in 2006,” says Sgt. Jared.
The Lexington police officer, along with two other first responders were the first on the scene, saving the life of pilot Jim Polehinke.
NTSB reports showed the flight wasn’t supposed to take off on the runway it went down, before crashing into a field just after takeoff.
For Sgt. Jared, thinking back is hard.
“I wanted to get in there and see if I could make a difference for somebody. That’s what really stays with me, even today, is wishing that there was more that we could have done that morning. That’s the thing that kind of bothers me even 10-years later, you know, what if this – what if that and that’s the struggle, for sure,” he says.
There will be a memorial service this Saturday at 10 a.m. near the Flight 5191 Memorial Sculpture at the UK Arboretum off Alumni Drive.
