First Special Olympics Practice Held in Danville
Lonnie Jones grew up in Ohio, competing in the Special Olympics. When he moved to Danville, he noticed there was no local team. He decided to change that this year. He told his case manager at A1 Case Management, Mary Carol Porter, he wanted to create a local chapter that could compete in the Special Olympics.
Porter and others began organizing the Wilderness Trace Special Olympics team and held the group’s first practice Tuesday afternoon at Admiral Stadium in Danville. More than 30 athletes practiced walking, running, and shot put.
The group plans on competing in the Special Olympics in Louisville in May.
