First Lady makes special appearance at Arlington Elementary

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) —- First Lady Britainy Beshear walked into a classroom full of eager second graders at Arlington Elementary School. She was there to read Standing on Her Shoulders and answer questions from students.

She explained her role as First Lady, saying she gets to do whatever she wants.

“One of the things I like to do is work with Andy, who is your governor and my husband, on things that mean a lot to us,” Beshear said.

One of those things that mean a lot to them include education. As part of the REAL Read Program, the first lady read to the students.

An activity that Director of Early Literacy for the Kentucky Department of Education Christie Biggerstaff says is fundamental to a child’s development.

“Storytelling reinforces early literacy skills including phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and it lays that foundation for strong reading and writing skills that they’re going to encounter in their everyday life,” Biggerstaff said.
