First female statue at Kentucky’s Capitol

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – It’s a statue that will soon break the ceiling at the Kentucky Capitol.

The Capitol will soon have its first life-sized statue of a woman next year.

According to the Associated Press, state officials will erect a statue of Nettie Depp.

She was elected Superintendent of Barren County schools in 1913, seven years before women were allowed to vote.

It will be Kentucky’s first statue on government property honoring a woman.

The rotunda has five statues of men. The statue is paid for with private donations.

The artist, Amanda Matthews, is Depp’s great-great niece.
