First African Baptist Church Celebrates 225 Years
Lexington, KY (WTVQ)- The First African Baptist Church in Lexington celebrated a 225th anniversary and homecoming.
“We are just happy to have this anniversary. It means so much to have been blessed by God for 225 years, and we just give praise to God and the saints that have gone on who laid the ground for us,” said member Dorthy Bibbs.
Pastor Moore says this church wants to be a church in the community, for the hearts of the community. They also have a theme for this year’s celebration.
“Remembering the former glory, that is remembering our past. Rejoicing in His glory, and being thankful that God has blessed us, but also reaching for the future glory, knowing that God is not done with us yet. So, we’re still reaching for greater things to come in the future so that God can continue to bless us and minister to this community and our congregation,” said Pastor Nathl Moore.
“As a member, it makes me feel proud. Let’s continue the legacy that the people before us put before us, so I hope I can do a better job than them, or continue the job that they have done, so I feel honored and privileged,” said member Michael Bolton.
The church has dedicated a Legacy Room to display most of the churches history. Some artifacts and memorabilia date back to the second pastor of the church. In 225 years, the church has only had 14 pastors total. In the past 90 years, they’ve only had 3 pastors in the pulpit.
“Without God, you can’t do much, but with God we can keep rolling. And, it makes us stronger and able to reach out to more and it’s just a big blessing,” said member Darryl Green.
“Church members say the reason this has existed for 225 years is because church goes beyond these four walls,” said Alycia Dahmer.
“The church goes into the community. We’re involved in the Lexington area. Church, yes is in 4 walls, but God doesn’t just work in these 4 walls, he works out in the community. Out to where everybody is able to get ahold of him and reach him,” said member Hayley Tinsley.
