Fireworks Safety Tips And What Can Legally Be Used

In 2012, an estimated 8,700 people were treated for fireworks-related injuries in U.S. emergency rooms, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

As another 4th of July weekend rapidly approaches, it’s the perfect time to remind people of potentially life-saving fireworks safety tips from the Lexington Fire Department:

  • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby to extinguish any fires that could start
  • Stay away from buildings, cars and other people when setting off fireworks
  • Only adults should set off fireworks
  • Children should be kept a safe distance away from the lighting point
  • Call 911 in case of emergency

When it comes to what fireworks are legal to set off, it varies widely from city-to-city and county-to-county in Kentucky.

In Fayette County, if it goes up or blows up, it’s illegal.

No matter where you live, check with your local fire department or law enforcement agency to determine what can be legally used in your community.
