New Fire Training Tower opens in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A new Lexington Fire Training Tower off of Old Frankfort Pike opened up on Wednesday, according to officials.

“This new tower will ensure that Lexington Firefighters continue to be among the best trained firefighters in our state and in our nation,” Gray said. “Public safety is our top priority, and that means making sure our firefighters have the training they need to handle the unique challenges in Lexington.”

Lexington Fire Chief Kristin Chilton said, “The new tower will help to improve our readiness when it comes to fires in high rise and commercial structures.”

They say the new building replaces the old fire training tower, which was built in the early 1970s and had outlived its usefulness. “It no longer reflected what our firefighters would face when they were called to a structure like this. It was a safety concern for us,” Chilton said. “This tower is an important part of our Fire Department receiving the top ISO rating and it needed to be updated to keep our training relevant to today’s demands.”

The new tower is at the Fire Training Center on Old Frankfort Pike and is used to train Lexington’s 565 firefighters throughout the year.
