Fire training prevented serious injury

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – According to the Lexington Fire Department all three firefighters have since been released from the hospital and are in good spirits. Captain Chris Bartley says if it wasn’t for their training, those injured could have been seriously hurt.

Bartley says they train for the worst because firefighters never know what they might encounter. He says Wilson, Adkins, and Burgin were aware of their surroundings and self-escaped which is a learned technique. But he says even with the intense training, injuries happen all the time.

“We have numerous injuries a year that deal with strains and sprains and stuff like that just from lifting patients or cutting down walls or doing stuff, I mean our normal job is pretty physical so. we pretty much train ourselves to be put in serious, confining spaces, we are put in entanglements just to be put in high stress in training and control our breathing and calm down and try to self escape if we can.”

Bartley says all three firefighters will be back to work saving lives in the next few weeks.
