Fire Dept.: Clear snow from hydrants

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Fire Department says a little bit of shoveling could also make a big difference in saving lives.

They’re asking people to check their nearest fire hydrant to make sure it’s not covered in snow. A hydrant clogged with ice and snow can cost valuable, potentially life-saving, seconds in an emergency.

Firefighters say to clear a three-foot area around the hydrant, and ensure it has clear access to the street.

The fire department says it has more than nine-thousand hydrants in Fayette Co. to help keep schools, businesses and homes safe.
