Fire damages Frosty-Ette in Sand Gap; U.S. 421 re-opened to traffic
UPDATE: 3:00 p.m. – The Jackson County Sheriff’s office says U.S. Highway 421 is back open after crews cleared the fire scene at the Frosty-Ette in Sand Gap.
SAND GAP, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Fire crews are responding to a commercial structure fire at the Frosty-Ette in Sand Gap, a longtime local landmark along U.S. 421.
According to the City of McKee Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, McKee firefighters assisted the Sand Gap Fire Department at the scene. Because of the fire, U.S. 421 is currently blocked in the area, and drivers heading north are being asked to use an alternate route.
As news of the fire spread, community members and former Sand Gap residents shared emotional reactions on social media, many reflecting on the Frosty-Ette’s place in their lives.
One commenter wrote, “I am 80 years old. Was there when I was a kid. Hope they build it back. Been gone from Sand Gap, Kentucky for over 60 years, but it will always be home.”
Others expressed hope the building can be repaired and sadness over the damage.
“I hope they can repair it. I would hate to see it gone,” one person said.
“This is heartbreaking. I love Frosty-Ette and all their little people. They’re all family to the Gap,” another comment read.
