Fifth-highest cases, death of 19-year-old mark another grim COVID day

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) — The fifth highest day for new cases, 32 deaths, including a 19-year-old, and another record for hospitalizations and ICU patients, highlighted another bad day for Kentucky’s COVID-19 numbers.

In its daily report, the state reported 5,197 new cases, pushing the total since March 2020 to 620,356. The 32 new deaths raised the state’s total to 8,003. It includes the 19-year-old in Daviess County.

The new deaths followed 36 Thursday and 30 Wednesday.

“We are in a dangerous place. Please, help us encourage folks to get vaccinated and make sure to mask up indoors,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a grim social media post.

Of Friday’s new cases, 1,443 were in people 18 and under.
The positivity rate dropped to 14% from 14.04% Thursday and 14.16% Wednesday.
The number of people hospitalized also continues to spike.
Friday, the number rose to 2,541, breaking the previous records of 2,479 Thursday, 2,424 Wednesday and 2,356 Tuesday.
After leveling off slightly for a couple of days, the number of patients in ICU climbed toa record 698, up from 665 Thursday, 674 Wednesday and 661 Tuesday.
And the number of people on ventilators hit 448 Friday, up from 434 Thursday, 431 Wednesday and 433 Tuesday.
