FEMA denies February flood assistance for additional Kentucky counties, Beshear plans appeal

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Governor Andy Beshear announced Wednesday that FEMA has denied additional federal assistance for several Kentucky counties impacted by February’s severe flooding.

According to a release from the Governor’s Office, FEMA denied Individual Assistance for six counties — Butler, Franklin, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, and Whitley — citing the damage was not severe enough to qualify. The agency also denied Public Assistance for Simpson and Woodford counties, stating the infrastructure damage did not meet the required threshold.

“While we’re grateful for the disaster declaration that approved some assistance for 68 counties, we are disappointed by this latest decision,” Beshear said in the release, adding that the state plans to appeal.

The Governor is expected to provide further updates during his Team Kentucky briefing on Thursday.

As for more recent flooding in April, Beshear has requested a separate Major Disaster Declaration from President Donald Trump. That request seeks assistance for 33 counties and is still under federal review.
