Federal court orders government to refund $130 billion in tariffs after Supreme Court ruling

NEW YORK. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A federal trade court in New York has ordered the federal government to begin refunding billions of dollars in tariffs to importers.

A judge ruled Wednesday that the administration of Donald Trump must begin repaying more than 130 billion dollars in tariffs that were collected over the past several months.

The ruling follows a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States two weeks ago declaring the levies illegal.

Since that ruling, more than two thousand lawsuits have been filed by companies seeking refunds. Among the plaintiffs are major corporations including Costco, FedEx, and Pandora.

Experts say it could take time for the federal government to create and implement a system to process the refunds.
