Federal assistance approved for Kentucky due to major winter storm
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Federal help is now on the way for Kentucky as the state continues to deal with the winter storm impacting the commonwealth this weekend.
Governor Andy Beshear announced on social media that President Donald Trump has approved an emergency disaster declaration, making federal resources immediately available to support response efforts from the storm.
“Good news, Kentucky — the president has approved an emergency disaster declaration for this weekend’s winter storm,” Beshear wrote. “This means federal aid is immediately available. This will help us protect lives, and I am grateful for this crucial support.”
State officials say the emergency designation allows faster deployment of federal resources and additional assistance for local and state agencies as dangerous weather moves in.
Earlier this week, Beshear declared a statewide emergency, activating Kentucky Emergency Management, the National Guard and price gouging protections to help keep families safe and prevent unfair increases in the cost of essential goods and services.
Officials continue urging Kentuckians to avoid unnecessary travel, locate nearby warming centers and check on neighbors — especially seniors and those without reliable heat — as snow, ice and bitter cold settle across the state.
Emergency managers say staying informed and prepared will be critical as conditions develop through the weekend.
