FCPS will have snow days at least one more year

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Fayette County Public Schools will have snow days at least one more school year. On Monday, the Fayette County Board of Education agreed to come up with a plan to take part in the state’s distance learning program, which eliminates snow days; however, the plan may not be implemented until the 2017-18 school year.

The program works by using online and pencil-and-paper assignments on days school is called off because of the weather. It can be used up to 10 times in a school year.

The school district would have to prove to the Kentucky Department of Education that students participated in the program and learned. If the state agreed that learning took place, the school district would not have to make up those days, which would reduce the risk of having to extend the school year and cut into summer vacation.

Some of the things school officials will have to decide is how to teach digitally, as well as instruct students who don’t have access to the Internet or are disabled.
