FCPS to host community conversation to discuss future budget

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Fayette County Public Schools is asking for community input on the district’s budget for the next school year.

According to the Board of Education, it’s working on the district’s 2025-2026 tentative budget.

The district says right now it’s dealing with an economic storm as it focuses on cost increases.

FCPS Board Chair Tyler Murphy spoke about their evaluations on several cost increases for daily operations.

“The cost of food for students has increased by $1.3 million, our utility bills are up by $2 million, insurance rates have increase by $17 million, [and] the cost of a single bus has nearly doubled,” he said.

According to Murphy, the district has reduced central office expenses by more than a million dollars.

The district says it’s holding a community conversation about the tentative budget with Murphy and school board member Monica Mundy.

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
