FCPS, numerous other school districts closed, trash pickup suspended Monday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Fayette County Public Schools officials are calling off classes for Monday, due to the extreme wintry conditions. Officials say they will use a nontradtional instruction (NTI), or remote-learning day on Monday.

Several other school districts in the ABC 36 viewing area also have canceled classes for Monday.

Winter weather is also impacting trash and recycling pickup across the region.

The City of Lexington announced garbage collection will be suspended Monday, Jan. 26, citing dangerous road conditions and bitter cold temperatures.

“It’s not safe for our waste management employees to work outside in bitter cold temperatures, and it’s dangerous to operate big trucks on residential streets in such icy conditions,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “Furthermore, the ice makes it difficult for residents to get their carts to the curb.”

City officials say decisions on waste collection for the rest of the week will be announced day by day as cold conditions continue.

Meanwhile, Rumpke Waste & Recycling says it will suspend trash and recycling service Monday across central and eastern Kentucky, including Lexington.

In a statement, the company said it plans to operate on a one-day delay for the remainder of the week as weather and road conditions allow — meaning Monday customers would be picked up Tuesday, Tuesday customers on Wednesday, and so on, with Friday service moving to Saturday.

“We don’t take the decision to suspend services lightly,” said Adam Rumpke, Region Vice President. “However, we must put the safety of our team members, our customers and the motoring public first.”

Rumpke also announced several facilities will be closed to the public Monday, including the Montgomery County Landfill, transfer stations in Scott, Garrard, Magoffin, Knott and Leslie counties, and the Rumpke recycling center in Lexington.
