FCPS investigates after student dies following “medical crisis” at Henry Clay High School

UPDATE: 05/14/2024 Friends, family, and loved ones gathering at Henry Clay High School to honor and remember a student who tragically passed away last week.

Officials say 17-year-old Emmanuel Mwakadi died at the school on Friday after what they’re calling a medical crisis.

Family members telling the Lexington-Herald Leader it happened after Mwakadi reportedly tried to break up a fight at the high school.

Mwakadi was a senior and set to graduate at the end of the month.

The investigation into the incident continues, as classmates continue to keep his memory alive with the hope that Mwakadi will be honored at graduation by leaving a seat open for him.

 

UPDATE: According to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, an autopsy was performed on Emmanuel on May 11th, and the cause an manner of death will be determined once the final report is completed.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – FCPS says it is continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Henry Clay High School student last Friday (5/10).

The student, identified as 17-year-old Emmanuel Mwakadi, experienced a “medical crisis in the classroom,” according to a statement ABC36 NewsNow received from FCPS.

The statement also says the incident is being investigated and additional comment will be given once that investigation is complete.

It’s been reported that Mwakadi experienced the medical event after helping break up a fight in a school restroom, but that information was not contained in the FCPS statement.

‘The entire FCPS family is grieving the death on Friday of the student at HCHS. The school leadership, teachers, and district interpreters have been in constant contact with the family from the very moment the student experienced the medical crisis in the classroom. This incident is being fully investigated and no comment will be given until that is complete. On behalf of the superintendent and entire FCPS family, our sincere condolences.’

Friends of Emmanuel say they plan a memorial vigil for Tuesday evening at 7:00 in the Henry Clay HS football field.
