12-year-old Katie Carter couldn’t be happier.

“I thought it was going to happen a little bit later on, but I was excited that it did happen earlier,” Carter said. “My mom called me and told me that they were offering them to 12 [year-olds], and so I asked her to sign me up for today.”

Keyshawn Denton was at Thursday’s clinic, too. The 14-year-old said he’s glad he can now join his mom, a FCPS bus driver, in getting his shot.

“I’m just thankful for it to happen so fast,” Denton said. “I got mine to keep my family and my friends safe.”

Doser Claire Johnson said she saw several excited parents and students.

“A lot of these parents have already gotten it,” Johnson said. “A lot of them, we saw earlier in the stages and now that they’re kids are able to get it they’re just so excited for them.”

Johnson said reflecting on her own childhood makes her job even more personal to her, especially now.

‘It just makes me really excited because I know the pandemic has taken a lot from these kids, and so being able to give them something that can restore that childhood a little bit, it just makes me happy,” Johnson said.

Carter says she wants schools to remain open and hopes being among the first of her friends to get her dose will make that happen.

“It’s starting to come back to normal, which is a lot better than what it was being online,” Carter said. “I feel better. I feel a lot safer being at school.”

Denton is also taking the lead in his friend group, and he’s optimistic about the future.

All my friends, they said they will get their vaccine in the next couple of weeks, so I’m really happy about that,” Denton said.

Fayette county’s having another clinic next Tuesday, May 18, for the public high schools. Students, family members and school employees can register. Three of the clinics will take place from 9-12 p.m. The other three will be from 1-4 p.m.
