FCPS holds 1st public forum for Superintendent search

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Wednesday night, two of the five candidates in the running for the Superintendent position at Fayette County Public Schools answered questions from district parents, students and community members.

“I was really impressed by the answers the candidates gave I think they were all very informed” said Jack Jurjans, sophomore at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.

The forum, although done virtually allowed the public to gather in person at the Norsworthy Auditorium to watch the interview process together.

Jurjans attended the forum.

“I want to get the best education possible for myself, but also for my fellow students.”

Candidates Tawana Grover and Demetrius Liggins were asked a series of questions, including if they would teach equity, inclusion and diversity within the school system, a subject matter that has been highlighted throughout this process.

“I don’t see the controversy with teaching exactly what happened as it happened’ said Liggins.

“I believe that diversity and inclusion is a direct line to being excellent” added Grover.

The biggest critic of the Superintendent search process…Education Chair for the Lexington NAACP Shambra Mulder also attended the forum.

“I thought it went really well, I wish more people came, but hopefully people watch it later I thought it was really well done” said Mulder.

She still wishes the process wasn’t happening during the pandemic so more people could be involved in person.

“And I think there’s some great candidates and so it’s not about the candidates at all but I just would like things to slow down and not be going on during this time because we’re going to have this person for the next three to four years” added Mulder.

The next public forum with the remaining three candidates takes place Thursday evening at 4:30 P.M. at Norsworthy Auditorium.
