FCPS finishes virtual forums with superintendent candidates, meet and greet next
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – As the Fayette County Public School District continues the search for the next Superintendent, its first search since 2015, the remaining three out of the five candidates did their best to impress the community.
Thursday’s candidates were Angela Dominguez, Dr. Melvin J. Brown and Dr. Christopher Bernier. They each answered the most sought after questions from the public, including if specific days off to protest would be allowed, if police should be allowed in schools, and what they think are the major issues in education in Fayette County right now….excluding pandemic related issues.
“Our kids are not fully graduating college and career ready so its really important we start examining what we’re doing to ensure students have the opportunity to either enter college or the career of their choice” said Angela Dominguez, from San Antonio, Texas.
“I think its very important were purposeful in making sure kids are good in a social emotional perspective and putting in place resources, counselors, social workers and opportunities for them to talk about what they’ve overcome” said Dr. Melvin J. Brown, from Ohio.
“We also have to always make sure that we are making, that we have the priority of making sure that all because that’s what the mission statement says all students achieving at high levels” said Dr. Christopher Bernier, from Las Vegas, Nevada.
But, the candidates didn’t just have to answer those questions. In addition to the public forums, each candidate underwent six different virtual focus groups with students, families, and staff.
According to the district, the goal is to ensure key stakeholders get a say.
And with the conclusion of the public forums, residents can send feedback to the board by Friday, May 28 at www.fcps.net/search , view other interviews with the candidates and see their biographies.
But it’s not over yet, an in-person meet and greet will take place 7 to 8:30 p.m., June 2 at Frederick Douglass High School, 2000 Winchester Road.
The announcement of the superintendent is expected to come in early June.
