FCPS board member Tom Jones resigns, cites “personal reasons”

Board is now accepting applications for the vacancy

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — The Fayette County Board of Education announced on Monday night that it has accepted the resignation of Tom Jones.

Jones resignation comes weeks after he issued an apology for remarks he reportedly made during a budget meeting months ago.

“I take responsibility for and very much regret having misspoken in this way. Never has it been my intention to demean or degrade any persons. and while I take responsibility for my misstatement, it was in no way racially inspired act,” says Jones.

The remarks were made months ago and were deemed racially insensitive by members of FCPS’s Equity Council Committee.

“Specifically, he stated, “i don’t want you monkeying around with the budget to Doctor Liggins. And that didn’t really sit well with me, and I think that that really is a cause for concern, and I think equity training, diversity training, things like that is a must,” said one member of the committee during a September meeting.

During their regular board meeting Monday night, members voted unanimously to accept the resignation.

“Mr. Jones’ tenure on this board has showcased an enduring commitment to education and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student within out district,” said Superintendent Demetrus Liggins.
