Fayette has 156 new COVID cases, 11% of recent cases in kids 5-17
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The state’s new mask mandate for public and private schools, preschools and day care centers could help slow what has been a stead increase in cases among student-age people in the state.
For example, in its morning report Wednesday, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department said about 11% of current cases in Lexington are among ages 5-17 years, with a significant increase in cases since June: 31 cases in June, 251 cases in July and 93 so far in August.
The first 10 days of July reported 46 cases, compared to 93 through the first 10 days of August.
Overall, Lexington reported 156 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, bringing the city’s 7-day rolling average to 130 cases a day. That’s up from 127 on Monday and 113 on Friday.
The 156 new cases also pushed the county’s total number of cases since March 2020 to 38,180.
The city also reported a new death, bringing the total to 327 since the outbreak began in March 2020.
The monthly totals of COVID-19 cases during the outbreak are:

Free COVID-19 vaccines are also available by same-day appointment every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in our Public Health Clinic at 650 Newtown Pike. Call 859-288-2483 to schedule an appointment.
The Public Health Clinic offers the Moderna and Janssen vaccines for ages 18 and older and the Pfizer vaccine for ages 12 and older.
While there’s still a chance a fully vaccinated person can get COVID-19, symptoms will likely be less severe and the need for hospitalization is much smaller.
Since February 2021, about 93% of Lexington’s COVID-19-related hospitalizations are in people who are unvaccinated or aren’t fully vaccinated.
Both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations can help slow the outbreak by:
• Avoiding close contact with people who are sick, especially those with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, muscle/body aches, loss of taste/smell, nausea, etc.);
• Covering coughs and sneezes;
• Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
• Wearing a face covering in crowded public areas.
