Fayette County’s weekend COVID numbers add to increasing weekly average
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department‘s latest COVID-19 update demonstrates the steady increase of the coronavirus’ presence.
The health department’s weekend report saw 210 new cases in Lexington from Saturday through Monday.
The seven-day rolling average has jumped up to 71 cases per day.
According to the health department, nearly 66% of Fayette County residents eligible for the shot have been fully vaccinated. While there’s still a chance a fully vaccinated person can get COVID-19, symptoms will likely be less severe and the need for hospitalization is much smaller. Since February 2021, 94% of Lexington’s COVID-19-related hospitalizations are in people who are unvaccinated or aren’t fully vaccinated.
For those not yet vaccinated against COVID-19, the vaccine is given free by same-day appointment every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the health department’s Public Health Clinic at 650 Newtown Pike. Call 859-288-2483 to schedule an appointment.
The special vaccination clinics offer the Moderna and Janssen vaccines for ages 18 and older and the Pfizer vaccine for ages 12 and older. Visit https://www.lexingtonky.gov/vaccines to learn about other clinics in Lexington.
Additionally, in partnership with Fayette County Public Schools, the health department will offer two free COVID-19 vaccination clinics. Walk-ins will be accepted and both will feature the Pfizer vaccine for ages 12 and older.
- 1-6 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, Crawford Middle School, 1813 Charleston Drive.
- 1-6 p.m. Thursday, July 29, Southern Middle School, 400 Wilson Downing Road.
Both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations can help slow the outbreak by:
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick, especially those with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, muscle/body aches, loss of taste/smell, nausea, etc.);
- Covering coughs and sneezes;
- Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
- Wearing a face covering in crowded public areas.
