Fayette County woman scammed out of $30,000
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Kentucky Office of the Attorney General has issued a warning after a woman loses thousands of dollars to a social security scam.
The attorney general says the Fayette County woman received a phone call from someone pretending to be an Internal Revenue security officer who told her she needed to wire $30,000 to a bank in Chicago to clear up a “suspended” Social Security number issue. The victim believed she would be sent to jail if she did not pay. By the time she realized it was a scam, the attorney general says her money was gone.
The suspended Social Security number scam, which usually includes a scammer asking for confirmation of a Social Security number, is a reoccurring scam that has been reported nearly 90 times in 36 counties this year, according to the attorney general.
The attorney general wants people to be reminded that a federal government employee will never suspend your Social Security number or demand you wire money over the phone.
