Fayette County sees increase in symptoms related to mumps
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A symptom often associated with mumps is on the rise in Fayette County and experts want you to know what to be on the lookout for.
According to The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department, the area has seen an increase in parotitis, which is characterized as a swelling in the glands in front of and below the ear or under the jaw. The health department says this condition can be associated with mumps.
Experts at the department say there has been a small number of lab-confirmed cases. Mumps is a rare but contagious disease spread through coughing and sneezing. The health department says it has some MMR vaccine available for those who qualify through the Vaccines for Children Program.
