Fayette County school board to meet as superintendent signals support for STABLES program

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Fayette County Public School Board is set to hold an action meeting Thursday evening, as discussion continues around the future of the district’s STABLES alternative education program at the Kentucky Horse Park.

According to Fayette County Public Schools, the meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the John D. Price Administration Building on Park Place.

Ahead of the meeting, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins told families Tuesday that he plans to recommend keeping the STABLES program open for at least another year. The program provides students with a non-traditional learning environment, allowing them to work hands-on with horses while earning academic credit.

The future of STABLES has drawn significant community attention in recent weeks. During a November 24 school board meeting, parents, students and supporters spoke out in favor of the program after reports surfaced that the district was considering closing it due to financial concerns.

District officials have not indicated whether a formal vote on STABLES will take place during Thursday’s meeting, but the superintendent’s recommendation signals potential movement toward keeping the program in place, at least in the short term.
