Fayette County Public Schools parents give take on NTI instead of snow days

Lexington, Ky (WTVQ): In Fayette County, snow days are looking a little different these days. Children who attend Fayette County Public Schools will continue learning now with NTI days.
Helen Bischoff, a mother of two children attending elementary school, says, “I think it’s work for everyone. I think it’s difficult for everyone on different levels.” She says NTI days offer challenges, especially when teaching a child for the first time if they didn’t experience remote learning during COVID. “I forgot today how much work it took a new child up to speed doing remote work through google classroom,” Bischoff said.
Alicia Henning plays a dual role with being a theatre teacher and director at Paul Dunbar High School, plus she has three children of her own at the school district. She says although there’s a learning curve, the shift helps families know what they can expect. “The shift is a positive one, it leaves out the question of is this going to be a snow day is this going to be an NTI day, will we be in person?”
Henning says NTI days still gives children the opportunity to play in the snow. “The work load that were giving them is not as intense as they would be getting in a regular school day, and they don’t have to stay on a Zoom all day,” she said. “It’s just a limited time that the teachers are available if they need the Zoom. But they don’t have to get on the Zoom.”
Bischoff says she thinks NTI days work best for students who have experienced it before. “The real crux of the issue is just having support and childcare support, especially for really young children,” she said.
