Fayette Co. Schools Superintendant Tom Shelton Resigns

The Fayette County Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton said Thursday that he was leaving the district.

Shelton said he would become the next Executive Director of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.

He said he would leave his position in Lexington at the end of the year.

Shelton said, "Although I did not enter into this decision lightly, I am very excited by the opportunity to work with other superintendents and impact educational improvement on a broader scale….In order for Kentucky to continue its progress in education, we must advocate at the state level for better funding of our classrooms throughout Kentucky.”

Shelton was named superintendent in Fayette County in 2011.

The district said that a superintendent screening committee would be named to help the school board choose Shelton’s replacement.
