Fayette Co. Public Schools welcomes new employees

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Fayette County Public Schools is rolling out the welcome mat for its newest employees today at an orientation event being held Tates Creek High School this week.

Saugat Bohara, who graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in neuroscience, is among the new hires. Bohara initially didn’t envision returning to a high school setting.

“I was about to go to med school, but I realized it was really, really not what I wanted to do. I wanted to help people really fast and med school wouldn’t allow for that,” said Bohara.

With the goal of wanting to help others, Bohara found a new path to making a difference. Now, he is set to impact students’ lives, not in a hospital room, but in the classroom as a high school physics teacher.

When I started subbing, I was like I love this. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” he said. “Physics is not the ultimate thing I want to teach.  I want to teach them like a life beyond school, like why we are in school in the first place,” said Bohara.

The orientation, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and resumes tomorrow at 8 a.m., is designed to help new staff members become familiar with the district, sign up for benefits, and network with colleagues.

“This is the ultimate on boarding event if you will. So This is a kickoff to our new school year for our new teachers and we want to welcome them,” said FCPS official, Clay Guillaume.

School officials highlighted that the event, developed over the past year, aims to ensure that new employees are well-prepared and equipped to enhance students’ experiences at FCPS.

“Everything that you do here at Fayette county is going to indirectly or directly affect student achievement,” said FCPS official, Shamiah Booker.

With the new school year set to begin in August, Bohara, like many new staff members, is both excited and a bit nervous about starting his new role. District leaders expressed confidence that the dedication and enthusiasm of the new hires will contribute to a successful school year.

“I thought I would be done with school,” said Bohara.

The orientation continues Tuesday and marks the second and final day of the event.
