Fatal accidents happen Saturday night, Sunday morning in Pike County

Men killed in two separate single-vehicle crashes

SHELBIANA, SOUTH WILLIAMSON, Ky (WTVQ) – Two men were killed in separate one-vehicle traffic accidents Saturday night and Sunday morning in Pike County.

Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post received a call at about 8 p.m. Dec. 18, 2021, reporting a single vehicle collision had occurred on US 460 in the Shelbiana community of Pike County.

The initial investigation indicated 44-year-old Virgil Allen, of Pikeville, was operating a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox on US 460, when Allen’s car left the road and struck a culvert. He was pronounced dead on scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.

Trooper Braxton Whitmore is investigating the collision and was assisted on scene by Kentucky State Police Post 9 personnel.

At about 9:50 a.m. Sunday, troopers were called to a single-vehicle accident on State Highway 292 in the South Williamson community of Pike County.

The initial investigation indicated 48-year-old Windel Rife, of Belfry, was operating a 2004 Cadillac CTS passenger car on State Highway 292, when Rife’s SUV exited the roadway, struck a guardrail, and continued over a steep embankment. Rife was pronounced dead on scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.

Trooper Matthew Cornett is investigating the collision and was assisted on scene by Kentucky State Police Post 9 personnel, Belfry Volunteer Fire Department, Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Hatfield Volunteer Fire Department, and Appalachian First Response Ambulance Service.
