Family of student hit, killed by school bus hires attorney

Superintendent is grateful for support from the community

WINCHESTER, CLARK CO. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — On Wednesday, 24 hours after tragedy struck Clark County, the superintendent of the school system addressing the community regarding the incident that killed McKenna Letcher.

Meantime, the family of Letcher has hired an attorney.

“We are hurting, we are heartbroken,” says Clark County Public Schools superintendent, Dustin Howard.

It’s a loss that has impacted a community for life, and the rippling effects continue to be felt throughout Clark County.

“We are managing the loss of a 15-year-old girl trying to support her family, trying to support our staff, our students, the entirety of our community,” added Howard.

According to officials, McKenna Letcher, was trying to cross the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Ironworks Road in Winchester, when she was hit by a school bus in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

“We have done everything in our power to reach out to support the family from the time we found out, we’ve tried to put strategic interventions in place from
transferring students that were on the bus to a different bus,” said Howard, referring to the 9 students that were on the bus at the time of the accident.

Ultimately, Howard says the only way to get through tragedy is together.

“We have to be a light in this time of darkness and although one light, one candle doesn’t burn very bright, we need everyone to support the family, our school system, our students and our community in a world in a time that is very easy to be cynical and divisive,” he added.

Meantime, Attorney Jon Hollan of Sam Aguiar Injury lawyers who was hired by Letcher’s family, released the following statement regarding the investigation.

“It is my intention to respect the formal investigative process of involved law enforcement as it continues to unfold while also working diligently with our own team of investigators and experts who are in the field seeking evidence as to the tragic events of yesterday morning. We welcome anyone with additional information to contact our office directly.”

Visitation for McKenna Letcher is Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Leon Pace Memorial Chapel, at the Scobee Funeral Home.
Her funeral is Friday at 1 p.m. also at that chapel.
