Fairfield Inn Condemned By Explosion: Guests Wait For Cars

It’s been a long trip for Anne and Bruce Bermer of Wisconsin–and they just arrived in Lexington on Sunday.

"We were in the hotel for about 30 minutes when the car ran into the building," said Bruce Bermer, as he described the Fairfield Inn on Lakecrest Circle.

While he and his wife then made their way to the parking lot, hotel staff went door to door as a second alarm system.

"There were seven rooms occupied in the wing of the hotel that fell," said Lieutenant Lee Hayden.  "They got those individuals out and that saved a lot of lives."

Bruce Bremer had to go to the hospital because he was struck by glass in the explosion that followed.

The explosion was a result of the driver hitting a gas line in the building.  The gas leaked and the blast affected the first two floors.  Later the third collapsed.

Debris from the building landed on top of his and other guests’ cars.

Now Bremer will have to find a new way home.

"We’re going to have to rent a car.  It’ll be headaches.  I liked that car. I just bought it a month ago," said Bremer.  "I’ll be looking for a new one."
