Estill County School calendar could change due to covid cases
ESTILL COUNTY, KY. (WTVQ) – Just a week into the school year for several districts and already thousands of kids are in quarantine. Fayette county has had so many positive tests and quarantines. The district has temporarily taken down its Covid dashboard so accurate numbers can be added. Another example is Estill County where 41 students have an active infection and over 400 are in quarantine.
On Thursday night, superintendent Jeffery Saylor and the Estill County Board of Education talked about how to handle it. Right now, Saylor says the district will continue watching the number of students and if cases continue to climb, schools could be closed. By law, the school has to have 170 in person days. To make up lost days, students could lose breaks or could stay in school until late June. Father Nathan Olcott says his kids aren’t sick, but are in quarantine.
“The teacher got a phone call and says to my child, you got to stand up if we call your name and go to some isolation room. Then my other child who was going to get picked up at the same time got thrown in with my other child in the isolation room with all the other kids that just been quarantine and its like..Does this make any sense,” Says Olcott.
Superintendent Saylor says the board will discuss potential school calendar changes September 9th based on how many students are sick or quarantine.
