Estill County dealing with multiple road closures from flooding
ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A sign meant to warn people about high water is struggling to stay above it. So is a fence, a gate, and even the trees.
“There’s a lot of people I know that work with my parents and everything like that, and they actually are flooded in and can’t go out of their houses,” says Estill County resident Austin Brinegar.
Brinegar works on a cattle farm along Red Lick Road. It was one of the 18 roads closed in Estill County Monday. He says the cattle had to be moved to safer land.
Estill County Judge Executive Donnie Watson says Estill County has dealt with 600 homes without electricity, school cancellations, and problems for families and first responders.
“One lady that works in the office, she couldn’t get here today… about all we can do right now is wait for the water to go down and assess the damage,” says Watson.
Watson is thankful the governor has declared a state of emergency and help is on the way.
“It’s very needed. We’ve got a lot of problems. A lot of problems all over the county. It’s not just in one area, it’s all over the county,” says Watson.
