Wayne County inmate recaptured four minutes after brief escape from custody

MONTICELLO, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A Wayne County inmate is facing an additional charge after deputies say he briefly escaped from custody — for just four minutes.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Shane Cooney escaped from the Wayne County Detention Center around 3:01 p.m. Monday after slipping out of a leg restraint.

Deputies say Cooney had just returned from a court hearing on theft and fraudulent credit or gift card charges when he took off from custody.

Investigators say he was caught at 3:05 p.m. in the Country Heights subdivision area after running toward a deputy. Cooney was quickly taken back into custody without further incident.
