EPA: High levels of arsenic found in Montgomery Co.

MOUNT STERLING, Ky. (WTVQ) – People are being asked to stay inside as much as possible after high levels of arsenic were found in Montgomery County.

According to emergency management, they found arsenic in soil samples near residential homes on Long Lane in the same area where the Southern Wood Treatment Company operated from 1977 to 1985.

EPA officials say the company improperly disposed of their waste by burying drums or tanks there when they tore the building down.

Emergency management says they will have to remove the soil affected.

They say they are meeting at at the site tomorrow with a contractor hired to clean the area. Officials say the entire cleaning process could take anywhere from 6 months, to a year.
