Emergency ordinance keeps services running in London

LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Several City of London agencies are thanking city leaders after an emergency ordinance was passed that allows them to stay on the job following months of budget uncertainty.

Multiple departments — including the London Fire Department, London Police Department and the city’s Public Works Department — posted messages on Facebook Tuesday night expressing gratitude to Randall Weddle and the London City Council for working together on the emergency measure.

In their posts, the agencies thanked city leaders for repealing Ordinance 2025-16 and adopting Emergency Ordinance 2026-01, which they say will allow them to continue serving the community without interruption.

The action follows last month’s announcement from Mayor Weddle that he would be forced to lay off city workers — including firefighters, street department employees and building inspectors — due to budget issues.

The situation escalated further when at least 86 city employees filed a lawsuit against City Council. A court hearing related to that lawsuit was held earlier this week.

Meanwhile, a special-called City Council meeting that had been scheduled for Tuesday but later canceled now appears to have been rescheduled. According to the city, the meeting is set for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the London Community Center.

City officials say the agenda includes discussion of an emergency pay plan, an amended budget, and body-worn camera ordinances.
