Electrical Fire in the basement of the downtown Hyatt Regency Hotel

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – In the afternoon on Sunday, July 14th, an electrical fire at the Hyatt Regency Downtown caused about a thousand people to lose power in the surrounding area.

The Lexington Fire Department was called out shortly after 2 p.m. for a private fire alarm that went off in the hotel.

Major Jordan Saas says the fire stemmed from the basement.

“So once we got on scene we found smoke, ended up upgrading it to a working structure fire because there was an electrical fire in one of the transformers switching boxes located in the basement,” said Sass.

There was only moderate damage to the transformer box.

First Responders say the smoke from the basement worked its way up to the top floor.

They used fans to try and get the smoke out of the building.

No one was hurt in the incident.
