Driver rescued from semi hanging off Kennedy Bridge
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A dramatic rescue unfolded Sunday morning on the I-65 Kennedy Bridge after a semi-truck crashed and partially dangled over the edge.
According to Louisville Metro Police, the driver lost control and hit the bridge railing, causing the cab of the truck to hang over the side. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and safely rescued the driver from the suspended vehicle.
Louisville Fire Chief Brian O’Neill said the operation took about 30 minutes. A firefighter was lowered down to the cab, secured the driver into a rescue system, and brought him safely back to solid ground.
“Basically, [we] lower a person down there into the cab. One of our firefighters was there to hook him up into our system to make sure he was safe, pull him up out of the cab, back down to safety,” O’Neill said.
No serious injuries were reported.
This marks the second time in just over a year that Louisville firefighters have responded to a rescue involving a semi-truck hanging over a bridge. In 2023, a woman was rescued from a truck left teetering on the Clark Memorial (Second Street) Bridge.
