Donating blood at the Capitol
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) —- Five minutes and 18 seconds. That is how long it took Governor Beshear to donate blood; he is now challenging his fellow Kentuckians to do the same.
The number of our country’s blood donors is at a 20-year low. So, First Lady Britainy Beshear organized a blood drive to encourage people to give blood and raise awareness for the importance of having a strong blood supply.
“Donating blood is one the most important ways we can protect our families,” First Lady Beshear said. “We have to make sure hospitals are prepared to treat every person who needs blood.”
She also emphasized the importance of blood to the American Red Cross, especially in the case of a natural disaster which Kentuckians know all too well.
The two were also joined by American Red Cross Regional Chief Executive Steve Cunanan who shared more information about blood and why it’s in such high demand.
“Blood’s a perishable product. Every two seconds in this country, somebody needs blood, and it’s the blood on the shelves that saves lives. So, it’s important to get in that habit of giving blood,” Cunanan said.
Following their speeches, the governor and first lady sat down to give blood.
Governor Beshear says he hopes this sets an example for the rest of the Commonwealth to get involved and help end the blood shortage.
“Team Kentucky is doing what we do best, coming together to save lives,” Gov. Beshear said.
If you missed this event and want to donate blood, you can visit the American Red Cross website to sign up for another blood drive. You can also go to Team Kentucky’s website to see information on their future blood drives.
