Domestic violence can affect pets as well as people

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 News) – Domestic violence can affect anyone — regardless of age, race, gender, or income — and sometimes animals become silent victims as well. Experts say coercive control, including manipulation and intimidation, often comes before physical violence. Research also shows a strong link between domestic abuse and animal cruelty, as abusers sometimes harm pets to control or threaten their partners.

The Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control shares examples of how animals are used as tools of abuse. In one case, a suspect admits to putting a dog in an oven following a domestic dispute and later kills their partner. In another, a dog is stabbed while protecting its owner. Other animals are shot or thrown downstairs during violent arguments.

Officials say many incidents go unreported and urge anyone in danger to seek help. Those in need can contact GreenHouse 17’s 24-hour crisis hotline or the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence for support.
