Lexington activates emergency winter weather plan to help homeless stay warm

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The City of Lexington has activated its emergency winter weather plan for Monday and Tuesday to help people experiencing homelessness stay warm as temperatures drop.

City officials say capacity at emergency shelters will be expanded, and Lextran will provide free rides to those shelters.

The New Life Day Center opened at 7 a.m. Monday, while Lighthouse Ministries on Spruce Street will operate an overnight warming center beginning at 7 p.m. Monday.

The city says the plan ensures that everyone in need has a safe, warm place to stay during the cold weather period.
