Deputies stop $24,000 scam targeting elderly woman in Boyle County
BOYLE COUNTY, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Quick action by the Boyle County Sheriff’s Office helped prevent an elderly woman from losing $24,000 to an alleged scam.
According to Sheriff Taylor Bottom, deputies were alerted Wednesday after the woman withdrew the large amount of cash and left in an unknown direction. Investigators say she had been contacted by scammers posing as federal agents who instructed her to deposit the money into another account and to hide her whereabouts from her family.
Using Flock license plate reader cameras, deputies were able to quickly locate the woman. She was found unharmed and still had all of the money in her possession.
Officials are reminding the public that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never ask for large cash transfers or demand secrecy. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to report it immediately.
